Hey gang,

So I’ve pretty much weighed 165-168 ever since college. Over the pandemic and hanging out so much at home I got up to 183. Well... swimsuit season is coming up so I decided to get healthy a while back. That and my gf motivates me because she works out a lot - pretty hardcore actually. Anyway, I cut most refined carbs out of my diet and started walking including hills. Rn I’m holding steady at 155 pounds which is pretty good I think at 6’1”. I’ve noticed my thighs are a little bit thicker too 🙂. I’m definitely stronger with more endurance without the bulk.

Its really simple and you can start slowly if you need to. I go for three walks a day; one after each meal. But sometimes I go before breakfast instead of after. Generally lately I’ve been doing between 7-8 miles a day at about 16 minutes/mile. If you can get used to hills eventually, they’ll really work your glutes. Anyway, just thought I’d put a plug in for simply walking. The best part is all you need is a pair of running/walking shoes.

Walking up hill is impossible here in southern Florida, my house is on the highest elevation in this area, it is 16 feet over sea level! Not a really breath taking height. Because of the temperature, we have to get all walking in early in the morning, our lowest night temperature is now around 74 degrees. Walking during the day is similar to suicide, and after dark it is still pretty warm, and once it has cooled off a bit, the skeeters come out, and try to take you up for a flight, and probably drop you into the mouth of a gator.
Because of the fact that I am a night owl, I sleep in in the morning, and I have no walking time available to me. Once I am cleared for doing gym stuff. I will go back to the gym twice a week for two hours each. I was able to maintain my preop weight pretty well, because I trained myself to eat less, and I hope to be able to wear my brand new bikini once we go to the beach again.

Your Florida weather sounds very much like what I deal with here in the Houston area Linde. Of course if you came to visit here you might need to find one of those oxygen bars as we’re at a breathtaking 105ft of elevation. 🤣

I can deal with heat ok, I guess. If I take my dog for a walk in the early evening when there is still daylight the heat has dissipated so we don’t fall out from heat stroke. But dang! The mosquitos are terrible. Yes... they’ll just about cart you away if you don’t keep moving.

Walking allowed me to hit my goal weight for surgery and also develop the fitness to recover quickly. I started 20 months before my surgery and walked 600 miles. I have worn out knees so I can't run, so walking was an easy alternative. Unfortunately I haven't had the motivation in the past couple of months and I have regained all the weight I lost in 20 months.....

Hugs,

Allie

About 50 to 60 miles south of my house are the Everglades, and they are below sealevel. No wonder thst ee. Are aittle on the low side here. I think we might be a couple of 100 miles south of Huston, which means it is that much warmer here. It is 2:30 AM currently, and still 79 degrees.

I bought a treadmill a while back. It was a great source of exercise until it threw the walking belt about a month in. Haven't been able to find a replacement yet. The cheap manufacturer doesn't do replacement parts, so I'm on my own. My city isn't exactly a friendly walking town.

Thanks for the reminder. I should be walking more. I need to lose about 10-15 lbs.

I used to get about 3 or 4 km a day walking the dog. But she is getting old and feeble and can't do long walks any more. Then I lost a year of walking while I recovered from GCS and struggled to walk 1 km a day. Now I can walk, but I've spent the last three weeks slaving away, building a "catio" for our two house cats, and don't have the energy for a walk in addition to a full day of construction.

But you are right, I need to get out there and put in the clicks. I would love to lose my my "muffin top". HRT fat redistribution has been kind to me, and if I lost a bit around the middle, I could tell I'd have a decent figure.

Get a stroller for your dog Kathy. That way you can still take her for walks with you. You could even get one of those running strollers.

I'm getting more regular walks done again. I generally try to walk fairly fast and my smart watch and phone app tell me that I usually average about 6.2km/hr (4mph) for anything between 3 and 7km (2 to 4½ miles) almost every day. My watch also tells me my pulse, which builds to between 100 and 110 on the flat but even slight hills will get it close to 120 and if I find a decent hill I'll slow my pace to try to stop it going too far over 120, which a doctor has said is a good maximum for woman my age (nearly 66).
Cheers,
-Kenna

I have to add that walking strengthened my muslces enough to reverse some hip tilt so I gained 1 cm back from the 3 cm I had lost in height!

My pelvic floor therapist is working with me to eliminate all pelvic tilt. Eliminating as much tilt as possible, helps to prevent lower back pain.

Me taking a quick selfie for my gf after getting back home from a 6.5 mile hike to picnic point yesterday. And pics from the hike.

Proud of all the hiking Lisa and I did. We kicked ass! From Sunday through Friday morning, we walked around Madison, hiked the picnic point trails here and had a great hike at Pike’s Peak State Park. These were my stats, and I know Lisa’s were even better than mine. I had almost 86,000 steps for just under 44 miles and the equivalent on hills of 81 flights of stairs. It was really awesome to be able to spend that time enjoying the outdoors together. ❤️❤️❤️

@ Emma, it looks like your body is in top shape. I am impressed of the woman I see in this selfie. I am a far cry away from looking that good, because I have that nasty ring around the middle a lot of older women have.

I am impressed young lady!
