Good for them! There was some discussion about equal pay for Aussie Rules Women footballers, but it just wasn’t possible. Their games are simply not of the standard of the mens, so can’t attract broadcasting deals, or major sponsors. In reality there simply isn’t enough money generated to do it!

I can't imagine this is the women's fault. I guess there are different standards for men's and women's games in terms of how the game is played and I assume the national governing body which cuts those deals with the broadcasters could have done more to promote women's games. And then there is always an option to transfer some funds to get the women's pay up to the men's level, if they are willing to do this. I guess they were not.

Heidemarie, the league funded the formation of the womens’ competition just 4 years ago, and started them off with televised games and some sponsors. Initially, there was a lot of support, and so talk of equal pay, but the audiences got over the novelty, and the ratings fell, so the sponsors left. The women’s league just doesn’t generate the income to support itself, and so it is being propped up financially by the men’s league to give women the opportunity to compete at the highest level. Professional sport is a business like any other, and needs to generate funds to pay players. The women’s league may develop in time and provide the opportunity for higher pay, it took 100 years before the men were able to generate income sufficient for them to be full time sports people.

Fairness is an often misunderstood social construct and there will always be debate about it, but business is about generating profit to survive and grow. Equal is not always equal……

Allie
