The problem I see with free will donations is that it will not ensure a steady flow of income for the forum.
Please keep the ideas for funding coming!

I can assure everybody that a separate, non profit type of corporation would be formed, with its own account and reporting system, if we would go the donation or any similar route. This corporation would get the money, to make sure not a single administrative member will be the recipient of the money.

So much passion is in this site .....I just read two pages worth of posts.......people have one major thing in common, whether they believe in advertisements, they believe in just simply donating......you all believe in the site and it’s obviously helping people. I know it’s helped me.

Id love to know what the budget for running this site is. Just how much we have coming in and what the average shortfall is. I have a background that could be helpful in maybe getting more direct advertisers with our interests at heart. I’m not sure what grants are out there but funding something through the government as non profit, could be a great option. The answer seems to me, will be a mix of all of these things. As far as google I agree turn it off.

The budget varies depending on how much promotion we pay for the site externally. We noticed the new member rate is proportional to the promotion. I doubt passive member donations would allow for much promotion (it is expensive), and we need new members to keep the site fresh. So I would hope another source of funding can be found, like an annual grant or benefactor. The site will continue, as too many of us believe it is essential to the wellbeing of many of our members.

Hugs,

Allie

Nicole, you nailed it, why are you not exhausted from last week and sleeping a rosy cheeked 4 year beauty sleep right now? ... ;)

After having gate crashed the party I had promised myself to stay away from sweeping statements for a few days, but I too am all too impressed with the passion everyone voicing up is showing for TR, so here is my five cents on this.

Although a few of us have already said they would donate smaller amounts on a regular basis, this is not certain enough to plan for the future with, I agree with "the team" on this and this is all the more true, if we agree on not making donations an openly visible and pushed for funding method on the site - and we do agree on that.

This still makes donations a great method (imho) for members to show their appreciation not only to the people running the show (we love you!), but also to all other members that have helped them, since more money in the pot means more TR to be had. That's like greasing that creaky wheel, a feel good move and I would love to have the opportunity to do that, so that's my plea for donations right there.

But honestly, I see TransRefuge's future as a non-profit organization with tax exempt status, a board, members and an agenda. There is so much emotional and thankfully also "real" intelligence around here on TR that I honesly feel that TransRefuge should become a voice out there, one that has a say in how things move forward in trans world and one that has a forum, perhaps its own help lines for trans people in trouble or at danger of hurting themselves, one that produces and markets merchandise.

And one *people take note* that has a forum which is totally safe for trans folks from all walks of life, race, creed, color, religion to discuss, share and weep about their trans fates on with the express promise that where it says public, it is public and where it says private it is private that noone is ever permitted to snoop for commercial reasons. I expressly mentioned race, religion, etc. since we are a white folks forum right now and the question bothers me why we so completely miss out on 0.6% of the entire people of color, Asian American, Native American, you name it populations. Surely they are trans as well and surely they will have many of the same and many totally different issues with it. TR should be there for all trans folks, but in its current form this would remain a sweet dream for sure.

Becoming a NPO is the first step towards becoming eligible for government funding and shows the type of seriousness in approach that will attract sponsors that are larger than your local donut shop. THIS is a big move and might well require for people this effort is centered on to rethink their lifes, so I am not saying TR should become a NPO, but I am saying that I already now see a budding bigger thing happening here ... (y)

Just my five cents, Euro cents that it, so make it 6 cents US!

Hugs,
Marie

Apologize for being late to the party on voicing an opinion on this issue, but I haven’t been on the site for several days, and am just seeing the thread now. I think all who use the site who can afford to pay for it should do so, and provide free use to those who do not have the ability to contribute. Tasteful, relevant advertising is fine. But, I am very opposed to data-mining from any entity that will then send ads “outting” my gender status to my computer, phone, or iPad. They are sometimes used by my grandkids and others not “in the know.” Nancy

I think there are more than a few that would sign up for a regular monthly donation.

Having a credit card facility will make it dramatically easier for people outside the USA to contribute.

I had done a bit of research into the available donation plugins for Xenforo2 back when I first suggested a donation system and there are several and some that allow for all that we might want such as CC charging, recurring payments, etc.

Until such time as enormous funding is found, I think we should move forward with donations. It sounds like most of us are onboard with it. Even if it doesn't pay everything, it can take some of the load off one or two people.

Kim said it best: "I am open to anything EXCEPT @Katie funding this site."

Mike

Donations are fine but keep in mind that TR is much smaller than other sites, such as SP, Reddit, etc.... It has been mentioned that donations alone may not cover all the cost of running the site. Just sayin. I do believe it is at least a good place to start.

Katie, I just quickly scanned through this page but didn't see a monthly current cost or forward projection. What is the site cost or estimated future site cost so we can understand what sort of contributions would be required to support TransRefuge along with enough buffer to allow for the sort of growth to allow it to become the site the board foresees it becoming?

The payment interface is installed, but I have some work to do to get the account setup for accepting payments.

@Katie, I don’t think the Top Donators tab s what anybody wanted! But I know it is just part of the setup procedure and won’t be there once the system is working!

Wow, super weird. When I installed the donation stuff, it somehow added me to every single usergroup, including groups for users that can't post. I got it fixed.

Working on getting rid of Top Donators and Recent Donations. I don't think that is in the spirit of our site.

It's working!

No, I still see it. Give me a day or two to get this worked out. I might have to reach out to the software company for support.

I meant that the donation directed me right to PayPal and then sent me a notification within seconds.

Okay, I think I got it sorted out. Let me know if anything weird happens or if you see anything out of place.
