Anyone into philosophy? I've just discovered that for the last 7 years or so a British guy who is also a professional actor called Olly Thorn has been presenting a series of YouTube videos called Philosophy Tube on current topics with a very heavily philosophical bent, regularly referring back to and quoting ancient and modern philosophers. His videos tend to be pretty lengthy. He has a huge following of 866K and then a few days ago, on 31 January 2021, mid-video came out as transgender and revealed her name as Abbey Thorn (see below) and her new presentation that is dramatically different to her previous persona, which she describes as a character she's been "playing", as in her private life she has been out for some time. She also has a "brief" 8 minute statement on her coming out and the state of difficulties for British trans people.

I read about her on Facebook and Instagram. Wasn't aware of Philosophy Tube before that.

Neither was I. Philosophy Tube has a similar style and range of topics as ContraPoints, but is less highly produced. I've sampled a few of her videos and "transgender" seem to be mentioned occasionally in passing. Her 37 minute coming out video that I linked above has had over a million views in 4 days! I first saw her on Facebook as well, thanks to Stephanie @CarolinaPhD .

Soooo awesome! I had been following Natalie Wynn (Contra-points) for a while and she talked/hinted at Thorn (Abigail Thorn, now) in many of her video acknowledgements and side thoughts. After Abigail's coming out, I actually started binge-watching a bunch of her videos. The progression from a simple "cis"-male actor with a philosophy degree to bi-sexual to a much happier transwoman can definitely been seen and felt in how she's made her Youtube content. I enjoy her work, but then again I also love philosophy and such.
I really like how she put in the script for her coming out of how she felt as "the man who wasn't there" and the real her was just "soldiering on" in the acting role of manliness, weary and weighted and disenchanted. But, then she didn't define her identity off of her suffering. She defined her "truer self" in the happiness she found inside.
That all really resonates with me. I may have gender dysphoria, but it's not what makes me who and what I am. It just tells me something has not been resolved and lets up a little bit when I live more truly myself. I'm grateful that someone with such reach and voice can live herself more fully, too.

@Loki Luci I've also watched a fair bit of Contrapoints but never picked up on the references to Abigail. I've only watched a smattering of her videos but I'm pretty sure that in her video on Steve Bannon it's Natalie Wynn who reads extracts of Julius Evola, suggesting that they've been working together for at least a year. :)
Cheers,

@Kenna , Natalie had noted Philosophy Tube, either directly or in passing, as a content creator-friend in at least one of her videos (I will figure out which one, I binged her stuff over the Holidays). Once catching some of the purposeful uses of phrases and situational information from Abigail that I had heard on Contra-points, it was a little clearer. I didn't mean to give the impression that Natalie hinted at Abigail coming out, but more that they had worked together and were on friendly terms.
I believe it was either in her (Abigail's) video on Transphobia or the one on Queer that she talks about a situation that Natalie detailed in her video Cancelling. It was that Natalie had different people featured as voice actors for different quotes. One quote read by a controversial transman was the content that went sour for Natalie and Abigail talks about it, though veiled, and how it affected her reputation. That seemed somewhat telltale, to me.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have realized Abigail was coming out, unless I had seen her videos leading up to this point, maybe.
