TransRefuge went live on Christmas Eve 2019. With it now being Christmas Eve 2020, we can celebrate one year of operation.

It was a year like no other before it, and not just because we launched a website together. The entire globe was cast into a pandemic. Economies were decimated. Jobs were lost on a vast scale. Here in my city, we had an unprecedented derecho storm with winds topping 140 mph sustained for over an hour. We lost 65% of our tree canopy. Schools were shut down for months at a time due to Covid. My wife was diagnosed with cancer. Other members experiences similar hardships.

And here we are, a year later. It was a roller coaster year not only for each of us individually, but also for TransRefuge. We saw several ups and downs. We grew, we adapted, we innovated, and we persevered. The online support meetings that were started by Linde and Allie brought some innovation to the trans support segment that was sorely needed and well received. The switch from a software that was troublesome and limited to a more scalable and user friendly software brought many improvements. We are still young, but TransRefuge is barely recognizable now when compared to its starting point. Like comparing a one year old to its newborn photo. I still see elements of our origins, but what we started with has grown and matured.

What does 2021 have in store? Time will tell. I know that I, personally, would like to expand the online meeting platform. I have also been contemplating for a few months some informative videos to be broadcast on YouTube. I can’t be certain when or if I will get to that project. If Covid gets to a point where gatherings are safe again, I hope to see some regional or local gatherings by TransRefuge members. That has been at the top of my wishlist since the start. We are starting to have clusters of members in fairly close proximity to each other. I would love to see more real world connections happening as a result of our site.

More than anything, I want to see each of you thrive. I am happy to see that our member base is growing more diverse. What thriving means is so different from person to person, and that makes it all the more satisfying when it happens.

For those who celebrate it, Merry Christmas! For those who don’t, happy holidays and season’s greetings! All of you have contributed to an amazing year that none of us will ever forget.

Thank you!

Yes Katie, your immense positive contribution to so many of us through your initiative and massive amount of work in guiding and supporting transrefuge is hugely appreciated by so many of us! Thank you!

Let's hope that transrefuge continues to grow and evolve positively with your guidance and contributions, but hopefully with less demand on your time and effort as you work on your own transition and family matters.

Hugs!

Indeed, Katie! There a others who also contribute a massive amount of time, effort and sense. I pretty sure that I don't know them all but @Linde has been there from the beginning and continues to share a lot of her experiences and knowledge. I continue to be amazed at the contribution that Allie (@OzGirl ) makes in keeping an eye on us all and providing gentle guidance as necessary. I know that there are other moderators and possibly also other staff members, but they seem to me to be more in the background but are undoubtedly making positive contributions. Thanks are obviously due to them as well.

It is also appropriate to acknowledge the positive attitude, good manners, humor and willingness to contribute by so many of my peers without any special roles.

Thanks everybody!

Thank you Mike, I am so very proud to have been given the opportunity to be part of this amazing team, but the community we have evolved into is even more to do with incredible members like yourself, Moni, Kim, Nicole, Michelle, and, well the list is long, including newer members like Blayke, Collie, Jan, and others who are further expanding this community. We just gave our members freedom to express themselves, and they provided the respect, caring and even love this community is built on. So we do have something exceptional here, but you can all take a bow for creating it!

Hugs,

Allie

I bow down and offer this sacrifice (Kim, get back here) to the Goddesses of Trans Mount Olympus who made this place possible. I think you have hit on a winning formula and I appreciate the freedom and the privacy that is here. Thanks to all the staff! You are amazing!

Oh no, it says it right here in my contract! It's right under, "Mess with Linde to the full extent of the law!";)
