I bought my very first blouses this week. I really like this one.

Kind of hard to take a picture of the whole blouse while in my car, so here's an image from JC Penney, where I bought this.

It is lovely Katie, but still not as pretty as your smile!

Hugs,

I really like the way the sleeves are done at the ends!

Brilliant! I love bold and asymmetric patterns! But I'd call it a long sleeved top rather than a blouse. In Australian English a blouse is buttoned right down the front, similar to a men's shirt.
Cheers,

You might be right about the linguistics. It was advertised as a blouse, but now that I think about it you are probably right. I’ll have to do some investigation to see if blouses by definition have buttons.

I found this. It actually says that blouses never have buttons.

Ha ha! :D Then is there a correct term for a women's top with buttons right down the front?
Cheers,

Yes, that would be a shirt.
The only exception is a t-shirt, having no buttons at all.

Having lived with women only for the last two and plus decades, I use the names for those clothing items the same as described.

I was brought up with my mother calling almost any woman's top with buttons down the front a blouse, unless is was designed for men, in which case it was a shirt, even if worn by a woman. A tank top, worn by anyone as an undergarment in cooler weather or by workmen as a top in warm weather was a singlet and something with sleeves worn as an undergarment by a woman, usually with a v-neck, was a spencer.

I never have come across the names singlet and spencer.
Not even when I lived in the UK, but that was very long ago.

These might be specific Australien terms for these items?

They might be peculiarly Australian but I've always thought that a spencer was an English term and as a kid I thought that singlet was universal, but that's obviously not the case.

Well now we have to wait for our British ladies to chime in.

Singlet, around here, is what boys wear when they wrestle. Well, I guess girls, too. Only ever saw one female wrestler.

Yes, that's the garment. There's an iconic series of Australian ads showing working men, mostly wearing navy blue singlets, stopping work to have a Fosters beer. BTW I've only had one Fosters in the last 3 decades and that was in Scotland 18 months ago to remind my self what it's like. It's drinkable but there are SO many better Australian beers! I suspect that more Fosters is consumed out of Australia than in.

With all this talk of trans girls supposedly having an advantage over cis girls in sport, a couple of weeks ago I saw an article about a cis girl winning a wrestling competition against all the boys.

It is like Beck's with German beers. You will have a very hard time, to find that stuff in Germany. And the beer they sell here as St. Pauli Girl is not available in Germany at all!

Hi Kenna,

If you still have that article could you post it? I would love to share that here in my state. I already have the natives stirred up and could use something like that!

Hmm. I didn't keep the article and it will now be way down my Facebook feed. I'll see if I can find it.

@Confused Hi Mike, I found it again with Google: Here's the most detailed article I've found, a video and in a bit more detail of the event. Then I found an interview straight after the event. You'll find plenty more if you search for Heaven Fitch.
Edit: Then I found this even better link.

There's also a less positive but well documented story of a trans boy forced to wrestle in the girls' competition and winning. Search for Mack Beggs.

And finally, here's an article discussing a bunch of trans athletes attitudes.
Cheers,
-Kenna
