The donation system has been active for a few weeks now and so far has been successful. There was a small increase in budget after it was realized that we had not counted in Paypal fees. Total budget was set to $425/month. We received $560 net, after Paypal fees. This is 130% of budget, which is a very positive thing. The extra money will be kept in the dedicated site bank account and applied to increasing marketing spending and act as a buffer for any upcoming cost increases for domain renewal, etc.

Thank you to everyone who contributed. I'll be resetting the monthly counter so it more closely corresponds to end and beginning of month.

The forum's donors have once again met the budget for the month, with 4 days to spare. If the donations exceed the budget, it will be helpful because we are planning on registering the Transrefuge organization as a nonprofit, and there will be some registration costs involved.

When the organization was still in its infancy, I registered it as a sole proprietorship, since it was only $7 and keeping costs down was a priority. Now that the organizarion has proven to be financially solvent, it is time to properly register it and get the tax liabilities off my back. The organization was never intended to have any single individual as an owner, so this is a step toward fulfilling that principle.

Additionally, there might be a new media format in the works for TransRefuge. It won't change anything on the forum, but will hopefully broaden our audience. We'll provide more details once we're closer to identifying our goals and core competencies for that expansion.

I am going to create a separate $50 fundraising drive to cover a new marketing exploration. I am limiting the initial marketing exploration to 5 days at $10/day to see how it goes. If you want to support growing the site, monetary support would be helpful.

Well, we have a little problem with the finances. As Katie wrote in the top, we need a certain amount of money each month to keep the forum running. If we don't have this money, we have to pay it out of our own pockets (as was done for many months in 2020), or shut parts of the forum down, because in the long run, us few admins cannot pay for the forum costs for ever.

We asked the membership/users how to solve the problem, and we all agreed that a free will donation system would be the best. We established such a system, and in the beginning it worked well. But we are finishing now the second months that we are short in the required funds to keep the forum going.
All of us are volunteers here, and nobody of the team is independently wealthy either. We are either retired, and on a fixed income, or have a family to care for.
We really need your help to find a way to raise the monthly money required to keep this forum going.
You all tell us that this is the best forum for people like us you ever have been part of. We now have to ask you to help us to keep the forum as good as it is.
When Katie and I started to dream this forum out, we had no idea what something like this would cost, neither of us had ever been involved in something like this. But now we know, and need your help in funding it. We never planned to ask for any money, but reality has caught up with us.
A possibility could be trying to get grants, but we have no knowledge how to go about this. If any of you has experience in getting grants, please step forward and help us to get one or several. The forum is a registered non profit company, and that may make it easier to get outside money.

Please help us, to keep the forum running!

Hugs
Linde

You're absolutely right Linde. A little help is definitely needed. If anyone has any experience in fundraising or applying for grants please let us know.

This girl!🙋‍♀️
I would love to help. I currently work as a copywriter, I have done a bit of grant writing and fundraising in the past. I have also done a bit of consulting for small business and non profit startups, helping get organized, putting together business plans, profit/loss projections, etc. I work a lot, have 5 kids and run an online business on the side so my time is limited, but I would love to help any way I can.
If someone would like to PM me we can chat, in the meantime I'll do some more research on what funding may be available😊

It is often easier to get things than money. If I knew what the (virtual) "things" that are needed to be paid for I could possibly offer ideas/suggestions.

Mostly marketing. Marketing is far more expensive than any other thing in the budget.

Are y'all trying to market to grow the number of people who use the site?

My response from another thread.

Absolutely those that are unable to donate are very welcome and should please be part of our family.

But as Director of Donation Nagging I have to do my job.

I just made my massive enormous huge monthly donation of......... drumroll please. $10.;)

So for those of you that can please contribute what feels right to you. And for those of you that are worried about security or privacy.......
I make my donations via paypal. How great is that?

Also please remember that this is a non-profit site. Those that do the work are also funding the majority of it. So if enough of us make at least small donations we can keep this place healthy and happy. And if you can do more that is fantastic.

Hi, @Melanierose ,
We keep the exact costs confidential, since we don't want competing sites copying our practices.

The biggest cost is marketing. Marketing is extremely expensive. The small amount of marketing that we do costs in the hundreds of dollars per month. The unfortunate reality of modern search engines is that it's mostly a pay-to-play game until you have a lot of traffic and search results history.

I just wanted to say something about our donation system here at Trans refuge. There is nobody in management here who is asking me to do this, fact is ..... I’m not even sure what they’re gonna say about me writing this. I have zero to do with management here. I’m just a goofy girl, freaking out at least once a week on my blog.

I am going to put out a challenge today to the trans refuge community. We have $179 still left to go in this month with only five days left. I know a lot of you are hurting, you don’t quite have the money, but if you enjoy the site .......you enjoy the community of this site........ see if you can find a way to just donate five dollars.

Nobody here makes any money off of this. The site is only for us. Over the next couple of days, I’d like to see if we can take care of that deficit. If you simply don’t have the money, donated what you’re going to donate this month and that’s what you have, I get it I understand that. It’s very legitimate these days, especially with all the things that we go through, but for the ones that have the money..... can you help?

I keep asking myself what is this site mean to me, how much am I willing to pay so I could have access or membership to this site. (That’s a metaphor there is no membership here) I spend so much month on things of entertainment value from Sling, to my phone, internet, I eat out sometimes just because I can. Now I don’t go to fancy restaurants, I’m not very wealthy. I am sure though I could skip five dollars of a meal at any time.

My challenge to the Trans refuge community is this. For every dollar that you donate in the next four days, I will match it. If everyone here donates enough to get us to our goal. Then I’ll start us off next month with a pretty good size chunk.

The truth is this if trans refuge wasn’t here, than Allie or @OzGirl would not have had the platform to reach out to me after my wife’s death. There would not have been a trans refugee zoom or Skype or anything. There would not have been the great friends that I have today, all being there for me. I would have not received encouraging words. Without this site there’s no chance I would have had the support that has allowed me to be the female that I now am today. I’ve referenced a few times before of how suicidal I was on two separate occasions, one before I came out, one after my wife died. To this day I’ve never given the details out on my second attempt but what I will tell you is if I didn’t have a trans refuge zoom meeting that first night. I would’ve been dead the next morning. I can’t put a price on that.

Again if you’re low on funds you having a hard time making ends meet I’m not talking to you I’m talking to the ones who have the extra and only they know who they are if not, then I guess I’ll be covering the entire amount for this month.

With love to everyone

Hi
Well done. You shouldn’t have to say it but I always forget so you did have to remind me.
I blame menopause brain for failure to remember

I have huge respect for the management of this site in making a point of not pestering us for donations and that for a long time Katie seemed to carry all the costs on her own. THANK YOU! I usually chip in fairly early in the cycle but for those of us who quietly benefit from transrefuge without being routinely aware of the costs in keeping it running, I wonder if a more obvious reminder, giving a report on progress, could be given around the 3-week mark of each cycle. Nicole has done so dramatically this cycle, at significant cost for herself - Thanks! I'm not sure what automated mechanisms can easily be set up but something specific once a month showing the current total and the goal wouldn't seem like pestering or begging to me.

Kenna, our intention was to never ask members for funds, and our focus is on looking for other streams of funding. We tried advertising, but simply not worth it, and now we are researching grants. In the mean time, as you said, Katie has carried the bulk of the financial burden, and the management members are the first to donate each month. It doesn't cost a fortune to run the site, but over a year, it adds up to more than we can expect the management team to put in, and so donations are the interim measure.

Hugs,

Allie
