Is the current Anti Trans movement affecting you, and how?

Australia is very supportive of trans people socially, but our conservative government has raised trans issues as a diversion to their failures in the lead up to our elections in May. I know they have jumped on the turmoil in other parts of the world to create these issues, but Q life, an LBGTQIA+ help line here, has experienced nearly 20% increase in calls from distressed people this month.

I have seen here in our Forum, the pain it has caused in the US and UK, and it occurred to me that we should be supporting each other. How much has this affected your life? Are you depressed, worried, feel unsafe, or maybe even putting off transition or coming out because of the current situation? Do you know somebody, especially Trans Children, who are being affected by this?

I know a family with a trans 13 year old daughter, and she has been wonderfully supported all her life by her amazing parents, and is living a typical 13 year old life….. almost. Because she has been so well supported, it is confronting for her now to see anti trans media for the first time in her life. This has caused her anxiety and self doubt, and reduced her confidence to interact. 13 is a difficult age anyway, and moreso for a trans girl who won’t be getting periods like her peers, so to now be hit with these anti trans debates can be devastating.

Yesterday a neighbour asked me why trans people just can’t have their own sports and not compete with cis people, and I told her there were so few trans athletes across so many different sports, they would never find anyone to compete with, so effectively would be ruled out of competitive sport. I am going to get these questions a lot from now, but I am reasonably well equipped to handle them. Even so, it tells me my neighbour doesn’t believe trans people should be intergrated into the cis world, an that does affect me.

Hugs,

Allie

Here in Canada, we have good legal protections at both the federal and provincial levels, in all provinces and territories. An anti-trans government would have a fair bit of work to do to reverse those protections, and the courts are likely to find such attempts unconstitutional. The Canadian people do not have much appetite for persecuting minorities.

However, trumpist opposition parties are on the rise, and we have a minority liberal federal government, that could fall if the supporting NDP (socialist) withdraw their support. There are moderates on the right, but they remain allied with the trumpists because they value victory over principle. Which is all to say that the social and political current climate is fragile.

So I worry. I have already excluded the possibility of travel to the USA. Even though I have several standing invitations, I just cannot bring myself to go there. It isn't safe for our kind.

It breaks my heart to read and hear about how the anti-trans lobby is persecuting innocent kids.

Living in Florida, in one of the very anti LGBTQI++ states, I personally have yet to see or hear of any negative effects for people like I. We still have our LGBTQI++ dances in public venues. I am still very open about my lesbian orientation, but I have yet to encounter any negative reaction.
I think all this is nothing else but political noise around here. I have a very close friend who is a 3rd Grade teacher, and she says they never taught anything about gender and sexuality anyway. The don't say gay bill covers K-3 only, an age group who was never exposed to anything gay related.
I think it is only that our governor can show what a tough guy he is and the trumpsters will vote for him.

All my medical records have been changed to replace trans with intersex, which means, any possible anti trans bills would not do anything to me. I am mostly concerned that the LGB community will be a target again, and our life and social interactions will be made harder again.

I do not expect to see any big influences for my life. I was way more concerned about Covid, and the lax handling of that in Florida!

Conservative Government in UK, having promised to ban Conversion Therapy for LGBT, recently reneged and decided to ban nothing and then after pressure from LGBT groups decided to ban Conversion Therapy for LGB after all but lamentably to allow Conversion Therapy to continue for Trans!

Conversely we now have our first MP to come out as Trans. This transwoman is in fact a Conservative.

That is both sad and glad, but, Pamela, has this personally affected you, or anyone you know?

Allie, I think that you're being a bit optimistic here. I think that while most Australians are supportive or couldn't care less about a person's diverse gender there's still plenty of right wing transphobes, TERFs and ignorant people out there. An example is that the comments sections on articles about trans women in sport in The Age are disappointingly anti-trans whereas on other topics the comments sections are strongly progressive.

Kenna, yes, we do have the negative element as I described above, including my neighbour, but comparatively speaking, we live in a supportive society. The conservatives are banging drums now to help the PM distract people from the real election issues, so they are speaking out more this year than ever before, and if the election goes the way we hope, they will crawl back into their holes. But this thread is to acknowledge and support those whose lives have been affected by all this negative comment and new laws in places, like what Kathy described.

How has this climate affected you or somebody you know?

Hugs,

Allie

So far for me, the effect has been a small psychological shift in the negative direction, ie, I am expecting someone to bring up anti Trans stuff in my presence at some stage in the near future. So far this has not happened.

As quite a few of you know, I have been in my current workplace for over 20 years, and had already transitioned before I joined this employer. I am not holding my breath to see if there is a morning tea held for IDAHOBIT, I expect there will not be, as these have been "banned" in the past, I have my Trans Flag proudly displayed on my desk in the office!

As for my personal life and socializing, apart from being cautious like I have been for nearly 25 years, nothing has changed.
In the past week, there have been 3 social events I have attended, all out in public. 2 of these events involved me meeting 18 new people.

Media consumption is something that I have changed, I am very aware of the need for me to avoid "doom scrolling" through too much stuff that would have a negative effect on my mood. So I am consuming news feeds in a very controlled manner (much more than in the past).

We all need to take reasonable steps to preserve our psychological health.
Please Take Care or Yourselves, and your own long term mental health.

Yes! It means the history of hatred in the world is still alive and festering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If we are to survive as Earthlings sharing the third rock from the sun, we must END ALL HATRED, AND STAND TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Otherwise, we will destroy ourselves. What a horrible thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for myself, I'm very confident in my identity and live in a generally progressive area, so it more of just an annoyance and provocative than personally unsettling. It has added to my motivation to identify the small number of TERFs standing for election to the Greens' State Council (i.e. the political party I'm now involved with) to be sure that I, and hopefully others, don't inadvertently vote for them. (This is an internal party election and totally different and unrelated election to the immanent election for Federal Parliament that seems to have triggered the current elevation in the public discussion on the issue.)

I was turned away for being trans by the first endocrinologist I contacted after they started passing the hate laws last year. That is now legal. Although I have managed to turn my church around, I have not changed the culture of my area.

Being post op in my environment means that any emergency I encounter for something other than a broken arm, etc. means I travel North if I can survive the trip. That means I travel at least an hour for relative safety, or just under 300 miles to a hospital where I will actually feel safe. After the results I endured from the past 2 surgeries locally, I would not let anyone local operate on me anyway.

I have a colonoscopy due in about a year and I plan to make the longer drive. I guess that means I am affected. Am I paranoid? Maybe, but I don't think so.

Mike

Fortunately I am not personally effected as I and most of my trans friends are too old for possible Conversion Therapy and now after 3 years fulltime, I never encounter direct hostility in my area.

Well, if you call this affected, than I am also affected. But not because I am intersex, but because I don't trust many of the doctors down here. I travel 6 hours north (but I am still in Florida after all that driving), to be treated by the docs of the Mayo Clinic. They seem to be the only ones who understand that an intersex body functions a bit different than a "normal" body.

Laurie and I just got off of a cruise, and there was a definite uptick in misgendering by staff and hostile comments from other passengers, compared to previous cruises. I’m not sure if this is from the current more hostile environment, or just the clientele of this cruise line, Carnival, widely referred to as the ‘Wal-Mart of cruise lines.’

(We finished the cruise in COVID quarantine, so exposure to crew and passengers was limited. I’ll post that story elsewhere.)

I don’t really get out much. Basically just go to work where there is just five and very, very few clients come by then I go home. If I do go anywhere, I’m still navigating the world looking like a dude. As a result, the transphobic rhetoric of the past few years hasn’t affected me personally.

However, after the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Tx THIS JERK, Arizona Rep Paul Gosser, decided to say that it was a “transsexual leftist illegal alien” who shot all those kids. Talk about ramping up my anxiety!

I’m really nervous about going out presenting as a woman.

I saw that disgraceful act and agree that everyone should be calling for Gossers resignation, as he is not just a liar, he has lowered himself to the lowest levels by trying to use such a tragedy to poison other people with his insanity. He must go!

Big Hugs to all my US friends affected by this tragedy.

Not only the lowest levels but furthermore HE KNOWS IT. Disgusting repulsive behaviour in the name of politics.

Big hugs from me also to my US friends at this sad time.

I completely understand this. The Alt-Conservative echo chambers are lousy with this, and no arguing about “fake news” will dissuade the more determined ones.

“Tracey”, a 17 year old trans girl, was assaulted in El Paso. Police there refused to take her report.

So far nothing has happened in the Portland, Oregon area that I am aware of. Heck, our Progress Pride flag has been up for 5 days, with no vandalism, to give you an idea how safe this area is!

Yes this affects me! Sometimes I turn off the news for my sanity. Usually I will read something and at least put in my 2 cents to put something out there to speak to the reasonable people who might be reading. I watched a video on detransitioning and of course it is a magnet for all those seeking any shred of something to bolster the idea that trans people are illegitimate. We have so much to counter their arguments, it is like shooting fish in a barrel to knock down the falsehoods. It is amazing how many suddenly go quiet. It may not mean anything at all, but if a middle of the roader sees all falsehoods and no counter argument, they are more likely to form long lasting misconceptions. I wish I was more outgoing but it is not in my nature to be true activist. I feel so bad for all those people being hurt. How can you read stuff like this and not have it affect you?
