Hi there! My name is Kari Meissner. Thank you, @Linde , for inviting me to this group!

My background is in Speech-Language Pathology- but my path as an SLP has shifted. A close friend of mine transitioned years ago, and I have a close family member who transitioned in 2016. As an SLP in the schools, I realized that I was spending more time, energy, and passion supporting students in the GSA club (Gender Sexuality Alliance) than I was doing speech/language therapy. I also facilitate support groups for people who are family members of trans folks, to learn to be supportive and affirming. My passion and advocacy made me realize that I want to serve the trans community and help people with their voices. I opened my private practice, Vivid Voices Speech, where I am a voice coach online and I collaborate with people to match their voice to their gender and communicate comfortably every day. I also collaborate with @Tallulah as we both are steeping ourselves in all things voice. Thank you for having me!

H Kari! And welcome to our Refuge!Transitioning is among the hardest tasks to attempt, and we need all the help we can get, particularly with voice, as it is pivotal to our success. I am so glad you are here and look forward to many discussions!

Hugs,

Allie

Hi Kari, glad you are here. My name is Moni (pronounced like Bonnie). I am enjoying working with Tallulah right now. She works me hard. lol Do you two, how should I put this, cover the same territory in the areas you work on? Don't mean to put you on the spot. I'm kind of rude like that. I am grateful for your advocacy and efforts to help us who are vocally in the wilderness. I work in the schools as well, by the way. Hope to see you around.

Hi Moni! Thanks for the welcome. Yes, Tallulah and I cover the same territory. We have different styles but our content is pretty similar. We love working together to build our skills. I am curious- What do you do in the schools and what grade level? I love secondary- middle and high. Especially middle cuz it is a terrible time for kids and I empathize! I love working with adults, too- I can be my direct self! Thanks for the welcome🧡

@Kari, is ther a specific course Speech Therapists can do to learn about Trans voice therapy, or is it something gained by experience? The reason I ask is in my regional area in Australia, there are no speech therapists with trans knowledge, and my doctor has asked if I can help establish a service here, by being the 'pioneer patient'. I'd like to be able to direct the therapist I will be working with to appropriate resources.

Hugs,

Allie

Welcome Kari!
Thank you for what you do.

I'm scheduled to a voice therapist next month.
Pretty sure they are going to pioneer on me, but hoping not!

Kari, I'm an ex teacher, now an aide, in a school for students with special needs. I've worked in all three areas, but I work in high school now. Only a handful of my student are verbal, so we are very involved with communication devices. Each area I find myself in, I get used to and then appreciate. Middle school! Ah those hormones! lol

There is a wide gap in knowledge between what our therapists do and what you and Tallulah do. I think working with trans clients would be pretty rewarding. I think such a therapist is very smart to be involved with the community. Teaching trans folks is not only about imparting the mechanics of the voice, but also understanding the mental aspects of things like internal transphobia and self sabotage. There is as much unlearning as there is learning for us. Oh, look at me, 'talking shop.' Shame on you Moni, this is her introductory thread. 🥴
