Thanks for the link. Very interesting, and a very brave enby. I must confess I have leanings that way, but I don't find facial hair works with an otherwise feminine presentation for me. But somebody like Jane Lynch -- that image works for me.

Pretty cool story, but I positively hate my facial hair and could not bear to present as female with facial hair. I guess that’s one of many reasons I identify as a binary woman. Not being an enby, I guess I just don’t have the right frame of reference to be able to present that way and feel positive about it.

Even though I lean non binary, I do not like the facial hair.

I could not live this way either. I feel only comfortable if my face is as smooth as my other body skin.

Hi from a very new member.
I am a biological male who has no wish to take hormones, consider surgery or present as fully female in everyday life. However I most definitely have (and have always had) a strong feminine side which, after years of repression and denial, has recently taken its rightful place as an integral part of who I am. It was a struggle but it was well worth it. And now that the genie’s out of the bottle there is no way it’s going back in.
I’ve always hated body hair so I remove it by regular grooming. Fortunately it’s quite fine so it’s not a big problem. Facial hair is still a nuisance though but I can keep on top of it with a daily shave. Apart from laser treatment (which doesn’t work on older people) does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance from a non binary who has finally found peace and authenticity in self acceptance.

@Linde what is that cream that you use? It might be helpful for @Jan.

Hi Jan,

Welcome to the Refuge. I am also non-binary, but gender fluid. Maybe in your age group. I haven't found a way to put that "genie" back in the bottle either. I think Linde will show up soon with a possible solution I have been considering myself. I don't remember the name of it at the moment either.

I think you will find yourself among friends here, with lots of information. Feel free to roam around and join in our conversations.

Hugs,
Mike

Hi Jan, the most radical method to permanently remove hair is by means of electrolysis. It is also the most painful and time consuming method. I know of a trans woman who uses and epilator every time her facial hair is long enough, and over time there are not enough viable hair follicles left to grow much hair anmore.
I have not much facial hair, and need to shave only about once a week. I started to use a prescription cream that I apply in the morning and at night (it also acts as a moisturizer). The hair stops growing over the course of 4 to 8 weeks, and no shaving is required anymore. But the cream needs to be applied regularly if you do not want to experience any hair growth.
The cream was developed for women who have to treat facial hair, and I don't know if it works when you have lots of hair and low estrogen levels?
The cream is called Vaniqa, and needs to be prescribed by a licensed physician

Many thanks Linde, that’s very helpful.
I live in the UK and have never presented to my GP with gender issues as I have never felt the need. Presumably this would have to change before I could request medication developed for women only? Are you aware of anything that may be available over the counter? I’ve heard of a cream marketed by a company called HairFree. Is this product known to the transgender community as being effective?

@ Jan, I have never heard of HairFree. However, Vaniqa might be OTC in the UK, because the Pharmacopeia regulations are different there.

There is some cream that says it is mostly a generic version of Vaniqa, but I don't know its real life efficiency.
Take a look here:

I am happy with the results I get from Vaniqa, but again, I never had male levels of testosterone, and never had much facial hair. I did not have body hair at all, and have female levels of estrogen.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply Linde, it’s much appreciated. I’ll check out all of your suggestions and I might even have another go at epilation. It was really painful the last time I tried it but I suppose it’ll be a test of my resolve!

Lol! Shallow, but I’m with you. Why?
I have no logical reason for disliking body and facial hair Julie G but it just feels ‘wrong’
and not ‘me’. In a earlier life I actually had a beard which began by not bothering to shave at the beginning of a holiday and then not restarting. One day I looked at myself in the mirror and I knew it just had to go. A little later I found a lotion (can’t remember its name) that removed leg hair which happily never came back. Now I’m restarting epilation so that hopefully I can eventually become a shave free zone.
I haven’t really thought any of this through, I just know it makes me feel more authentic.
I’ve only recently realised how important that word is.

I underwent both laser treatments and electrolysis in early 2000's. Electrolysis was far more effective but also much more painful. I still have facial hair but almost completely unnoticeable after shaving. I can even pas after two or three days not shaving though I don't like how it feels.

Although I was determined never to transition, I was a binary female and facial hair was a definite dysphoria trigger, and I always hated shaving. I had very low T so not much body hair. I had a light coloured beard which was good for hiding, though you could see some beard shadow, but it also meant laser was of little use and I am having electrolysis. This is how I looked prior to starting HRT and electrolysis.

Hugs,

Allie
