A while back I posted something about the Fourth Floor Salon, a salon at the University of Iowa Hospital that gives free consultations to transgender clients of the LGBTQ Clinic.

I had an appointment scheduled today. Despite the fact that my grandfather just died and I am quite busy writing the eulogy for his funeral, I decided to keep my appointment.

I am really glad I kept my appointment. The results were even better than I expected. The ladies at the salon did a fantastic job. One old gal kept misgendering me, but she corrected herself several times and it was clear she was attempting to be polite, so I didn't make a big fuss. They even gave me a "starter kit" cosmetics bag when we were done.

Warning: image intense material ahead! I was really excited about how things turned out and took several pictures of myself in various lighting with and without my glasses.

I decided to eat lunch at a fast food place just to see what reaction I got. I used my best girl voice and nobody gave me a second look when I ordered or while I was eating! A very incredible and validating experience. I blended in as just another lady eating lunch.

Congratulations! Glad to hear that everything went well and you didn't have any issues.

I am sure you still feel the euphoria from that adventure. Enjoy the moment!

Very much so! I need to pick out an image to use as a head shot for a publication I will be featured in. Any suggestions are welcome.

Way to go Katie, you look great Soft hair and soft features, and your eyes are really pretty! I like the shot of you in the striped top with your glasses! I bet you got a buzz out of doing that, and you will be craving doing it again.

@OzGirl , yeah it was a ton of fun! I need some more work on eyebrow shaping before I go further. They don't look terrible, but they could look a lot better. Laser hair removal would also help a ton. They did their best to conceal my dark hair shadow, but you can still see it if you're looking for it. Out in public nobody seemed to clock me as a guy, so it was effective.

OMG you are so cute! Sounds like you had fun and learned some of how it feels to be perceived as female. Congrats!

@Moni it was really wonderful! Being out in public and not having anyone give me a second thought was really validating and surreal. It was one of those experiences I have dreamed of since I was little and it became a reality today.

I remember last summer when I met Linde for the first time and she gave me a quick parking lot makeover (fun story). She looked at me after she got done and said, "My God, you've really got it in you!". She said later on that when she first saw me, I had such an angry man face, and she was surprised how well I polished up with some makeup.

Today really reminded me of that first time I got to see the potential that was in me. But now HRT has had many months in between to do more work and now with longer hair I can finally see that potential in real life that Linde originally saw hidden away behind all the anger and what was left of the testosterone.

@OzGirl , no, but I would like to have a small amount of plastic surgery to straighten out that scar on my upper lip. It really makes my smile look crooked and it drives me nuts. I also can't whistle because of it.

You have to learn that women should not whistle after men!
So you don't need surgery.  You might be able to deal with that scar with scar massage or laser treatment.  Any surgery will leave new scars behind!

Trust me, I am not whistling at men! Not to offend any straight ladies here or gay guys, but men don't captivate me in any fashion.

Well, how should one know now after you have become a hottie?

Congratulations Katie on 3 counts:

On your first day out in public yesterday
On it being such a success; it is so uplifting to be perceived and treated as a woman!
On being reminded and hence encouraged and motivated by witnessing your potential.

I wish you many more happy trips out before you decide to go fulltime (in your own time of course).

Hugs

Nope!  If I could whistle (I never learned it), I would consider whistling after you!

I'm glad you are my friend, otherwise I would find that creepy.

Well, I am lesbian, and you are a pretty lady!  What shall I say?  But I am not after friends and family members anyway, and I can't whistle!
