Linde, I appreciate that warning. I have that feeling presently though to a very large extent.

I am amazed at how different my voice sounds in my head vs hearing my voices played back on recordings. I love how my voice sounds in my head, but I can't stand the voice I hear from playback, so much so that I honestly don't believe that that's really my voice. I HATE IT!!! Huge HUGE UNBELIEVEABL SOURCE of DYSPHORIA for me. Sometimes I hear that ugly voice in echo on phone calls and it freakin drives me mad. I don't remember this being a problem for me in my earlier days. My voice therapist would ask me, "what is it that you don't like about your voice?". My only reply was "everything!!!". Honestly, to this day, I still can't believe that's my voice I hear in the phone, or on playback, because the difference is so HUGE for me. And if the coughing and clearing my throat sounds bad in my head, I can imagine how bad I must sound on the phone, or in public.

I don’t like my voice, but it’s not dysphoric. I hate that it confuses people who talk to me, and purely for that reason, I am enrolled for a 3 month course of voice therapy, though I question if I have the drive to make substantial change. I take @Donica ’s point that we do sound completely differently to ourselves than to others, and this is why we need help to find the voice we like. My ex had a saying “if you want it bad enough, you will make it happen”, and I feel it has merit.

I associate with mainly older women, and some of them have quite low and gravely voices (due undoubtedly to a lifetime of enjoyment over self care) but due to the way they talk, they would never be misgendered. Learning the language of women is more important to me than significantly changing my pitch, as an older person, I am not expected to have a high pitched voice.

Hugs,

Allie

I hear my brothers voices in my phone/recordings. That simply won't do! Perhaps that would have been a good answer for my voice therapists question?

This seems to be a very involved surgery, and some of his results sound to "girlish" to me, unless these patients were rather young persons.

My surgery did not involve any outside incisions, but I did not need to have an Adams Apple removed. It looks pretty scary to me, how he approaches this. My surgery took about an hour, but it was entirely different, and the idea was to give me a voice again, sounding female was just an appreciated side effect. Like he says, I am not able to speak with a male sounding voice for any amount of time, but I am very OK with this, because trying to be a guy again is not one of my desires. It did not work very well the first time around anyway.

All said, I think he should invest some money in a good haircut with a qualified barber!

I was talking to a good female friend of mine last week and we were talking about voice. I told her about various surgeries throughout the world and how some of them could be very dangerous and that people have lost their voices altogether because of bad results. I told her that's why I'm very reluctant to have voice surgery.

She told me that as women age their voices naturally get deeper and that even she's been misgendered on the phone occasionally. She told me that I have a very soothing voice and that she doesn't want me to try to change it in any way, but that she would support me if I did. She said that in her opinion if I were going to have some surgery she'd go with a breast augmentation, because in her words "you need boobies."

So I'm going to go with a BA if I can ever afford it because I highly agree with her.
