Thank you for posting this @Katie ! This is a significant step forward for trans people around the globe as the APA is a lead organisition followed by many others, including WPATH. It is likely they also influenced the treatments allowed by insurers in the USA and the doorway is open to more coverage for necessary medical procedures. It has been a disgrace for the APA to hold trans under the mental disorder classification for this long and begs the question that it was profit driven. Hopefully now the US can start to catch up to the rest of the world with trans care.

Hugs,

Allie

@ Allie, knowing the American health care field pretty well, I don't think that the AHA ruling will make much difference in they way the insurance companies (mostly privately held for profit companies) will pay for any treatments that are not deemed required by the governing bodies. In most of their decisions they follow the lead of Medicare/Medicaid that are controlled by politicians.

It's not all about insurance companies. My insurance carrier is actually one of the more trans friendly insurance companies in the US. I still can't get trans affirming care (I don't even know how I got my therapist and HRT paid for, I found out two weeks ago that neither of those two things were supposed to be paid for). My employer was able to opt out of things that my insurance company would cover.

@ Katie, I would talk with the HR department about that. If they consider you to be a valuable employee who they want to keep on their payroll, they can do things for you individually that this stuff would get covered.

I did. My employer is 100% behind me and supportive. The problem is our parent company. They are a huge conglomerate with tens of thousands of employees. I am nothing to them. Change could come, but it won't be immediate. Big ships don't turn very fast.

One should think that a large company like this has quite a few trans and intersex employees, you guys should try to form something like a union, to correct the benefits problems.

You would hope, but the majority of their big accounts across the business units are defense related. It's a very conservative atmosphere at the corporate level. But I will still try to get some action through HR.

Yes, you never know what you can move, if you don't try! Can you buy an additional insurance like I did with Medicare. It looks like I will not see any billing from my surgery, and i did not have any cost of the vocal surgery either.

What additional insurance would I buy to cover GCS?

I bought a so called Plan F, but I have Medicare as main carrier, I don't know what companies offer for non Medicare insured customers. You could contact an insurance broker (I did that for my plan), and see if they find a real good plan for you!

Linde, you can no longer buy Plan F, unless you already have it. I don't know how much longer they will let you keep Plan F. You now have to get Plan G, which seems to be as good. I paid less than $100 extra last year for my medical other than prescriptions and the monthly premiums plus the annual deductible of around $200. That was with radiation costs nearing $100k. The worst part of Medicare is the Part D prescription plans.

@Katie You have to be on Medicare to get it.

I don't know if there are personal plans you can get or not. I don't think Kaiser covers Iowa.

Hugs,
Mike

Cobra is available if you lose coverage from your employer but you don't want to look at the premium, yikes! You might want to look into Obama care, especially now there is the Biden administration..

In researching this just now "Biden and transgender surgery" , I found out that the VA will now cover it for active duty and veterans. Hurray I'm a veterans! I hope it's true.

Yes I have a friend temporarily on Cobra and she definitely complains about the premium.
