Some of you already know my passion is marine critters and I love to capture them on film, so I thought you might enjoy some of my videos. The first one I will post is a local phenomenon where 100,000 spider crabs aggregate to moult and mate under or near a pier. The water is shallow at 10 to 12 feet  so people on the pier get to see this event each June. I am involved in a study of these crabs where we are recording sizes and taking samples of the moults to chemically analyse to see if there are variations with moults from other locations. This may give us the ability to track movements and genetic diversity. Each year I take some of my work colleagues to dive the chilly (45F) water to see this event.

I hope you enjoy watching!

Great footage!  I had no idea that they would congregate like that.  Which variety of spider crab is this?

Thank you Madame! These are giant spider crabs Leptomithrax gaimardii and common in south east Australia! That stack of crabs can be 3 feet deep!

This is beautiful, but a very large size in Iraq. There is no interest in a wild life here. He loves scenes, documentary reports, about animals

Todays video if from a Marine National Park in the Phillipines called Tubbataha. This area is closed 9 months per year to tourists to protect the inhabitants, and permanently closed to fishing. The results of this are spectacular.

Enjoy,

Allie

We'll get out of the salt and into the fresh with this video where we explore spring water fed ponds in South Australia. Ewens Ponds are known for their crystal clear water, aquatic plants and animals, and the very pretty creeks joining the ponds. Come for a swim with me!

Thank you Allie for sharing your beautifully put together videos.

They take this viewer to a soothing place, opening the mind. Wonderful.

Are the bubbling sand beds in the fresh water video due to thermal activity?

Maddie, the bubbling sand is a vent from and aquifer. The whole area is porous limestone, and rain falling on the higher areas percolates down to the water table and sometimes vents. That water fell as rain thousands of years ago and comes out as a spring at constant temperature of 59 deg F. A pretty cool place! Underwater is my soothing place!

Today, we will go to the southernmost tip of the Australian continent, a national Park known as Wilson's Promontory. The scenery here is spectacular above the water with granite mountains and picturesque bays, but my interest is what lies beneath the offshore granite islands. Boulders over a hundred feet across lay stacked on top of each other under the water, forming a labyrinth of caves and tunnels to explore, while never getting too far from an entrance. The highlight is swimming with dozens of seals at a seal colony. This place is remote with no facilities for divers, so we need to be completely self sufficient. I love this place so much I have made more than 40 trips to dive there since 1985.

Very Cool Allie;
I have been diving since I was 15 and this just give me another reason to make an effort to head down south at some point. I can imagine the 45F water is a challenge (what no dry suits😲) but that is just part of the admission price.😉

Thanks Ava, though unfortunately pain in my developing breasts is keeping me out of the water! Seems I can dive or grow breasts, but not both, and it’s part of the admission price!

Hugs,

Allie
